‘Including Calcium in Mathematical Models for Atherosclerosis'

The project aims to include calcium in mathematical models for atherosclerosis, a condition impacting the human heart, which is has limited exploration in the mathematical modelling field. This intends to be completed by reading existing mathematical literature on the atherosclerosis model, reviewing biological literature on calcification, and developing an initial model using partial differential equations (PDES), which will then be investigated using a combination of numerical simulation and bifurcation analysis.

Faith Sawers is a prospective Master of Philosophy (MPhil) student at the University of Adelaide, with plans to begin her research in 2025. Her primary academic interests lie in mathematical biology and medicine, with a focus on applying partial differential equations, fluid mechanics, and numerical analysis to understand cardiovascular conditions. Faith aims to contribute through her research advancements in predictive models of heart disease progression.

Faith is particularly passionate about inspiring young girls and others to explore mathematics and appreciate both its beauty and application in the real world. She aspires to use mathematics to improve people’s health and lives through deepening scientific
understanding of human biology.
