Facts Are Relative

In recent years, a renewed interest in the foundational questions of quantum mechanics, in particular the extended Wigner’s friend experiments, has emerged. Experimental verification of what were initially thought experiments has shown that several classically reasonable assumptions cannot simultaneously hold, including ‘locality’, ‘single world’, and ‘absoluteness of observed events’. The mathematics underpinning these ideas will be extensively developed, as well as the physics and philosophy required to tackle them. The project aims to analyse the extended Wigner’s friend experiments in great detail, and interpret the consequences of the startling results.

Alex Paviour

University of Wollongong

Alex Paviour is an undergraduate student at the University of Wollongong, where he studies a Bachelor of Mathematics Advanced and a Bachelor of Science majoring in physics. He is keenly interested in applications of mathematics to physics, including fundamental physical theories and arising philosophical questions. More broadly, Alex also takes interest in mathematical modelling and computational physics. Alex is also a musician and an outreach mentor at UOW. He is looking forward to pursuing higher study and further research in the future.
