The aim of this project is to assist Eastern Palliative Care in matching their palliative nurses to scheduled client visits while respecting qualifications, shift rules, travel time and the need for continuity of care. Using the service’s de-identified historical records and potentially simulated data, the project will quantify current capacity shortfalls, test roster changes, and deliver recommendations for rostering and resourcing. The outcome will support safer, more efficient care and inform decisions about staffing or operational changes.

Thomas Caldecott is an undergraduate student at Monash University, where he is completing a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Mathematics. His current interests include probability and optimisation with a blossoming curiosity about how mathematical theory interacts with real-world systems. Thomas is currently involved in a project on mathematical optimisation for healthcare rostering, focusing on the design of efficient and practical staffing frameworks. His previous projects, include studying dynamic percolation on perfect trees, examining the sampling effectiveness of Markov chains near criticality. Outside of mathematics, he enjoys long hikes in tall mountains, and playing soccer.
