Critical fluctuations in complex dynamical systems have been studied in various contexts in order to both predict and better understand system behaviour prior to an observed phase transition. The aim and research of this project is to both define and identify in a dynamical systems context a measure of ‘extreme events’, which could correlate in the physical world to natural extreme phenomenon and are a particular kind of critical fluctuation.

Daniel Claassen is a prospective honours student currently studying at the University of Western Australia in Perth. While interested in fields across mathematics like group theory and geometry, his primary research interest is in complex systems and time series analysis. Daniel considers mathematical maturity a core tenet of good research and is always looking to learn from others in the field. With a clear focus on his skills in scientific communication, he hopes to convey his ideas in an agreeable and approachable manner.
