Abstract:
My passion for data science has been growing every day since I first entered university. Since I was a small kid in primary school, I have always enjoyed mathematicians and love to deal with numbers. That’s one of the reasons why I chose to be a data science student. This interest has opened many opportunities, including a summer scholarship research program, where I could explore my curiosity and connect with others who share the same passion for numbers.
Blog Post :
My journey into data science started the moment I stepped into university. I’ve always enjoyed numbers and solving problems, but it was during my first semester that I did a subject called “Thinking about data”, which was lectured by my supervisor-Dr. Gizem Intepe, that made me realized numbers and data can be made sense of and interpreted. The subject taught me many basic terms like standard deviation, p-value… Those concepts were very new and challenging for me at that time but the more I made sense of it, the more I was fascinated by the fact that all of this can be used to turn a bunch of messy data into something meaningful, which can be used to answer many questions and solve problems in our daily life.
Through my experience during this summer research, I first learned whether I am suited for a research job. The answer is yes-I found it very enjoyable to explore things by myself, keep asking questions, and search for answers. The experience also reignited my passion for mathematics, not only because of my own research but also by seeing the projects and discoveries of other students. It was amazing to see them come up with more and more questions even after finishing their research questions. Watching how they approached problems and made sense of complex data inspired me and showed me how exciting and creative research can be.
Looking ahead, I am excited to continue exploring the world of data science and mathematics, and to see how I can apply these fields to real-life problems. I hope to work on projects that challenge me to think critically, apply mathematical concepts in creative ways, and experiment with data. Ultimately, I am looking forward to using my skills to solve meaningful problems and nurturing my curiosity for mathematics and data science, discovering new insights along the way.
